Suma is a large ground vine with an intricate deep root system it grows throughout the Amazon basin area and can be also found in Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. Known as Pfaffia throughout Central and South America with over 50 different type species growing in the tropical regions of the area.
In South America Suma is known as Brazilian ginseng, since it is widely used as an adaptogen for many things, much like regular ginseng. Tribes of the Amazon region have used suma root for generations for a wide variety of health purposes, including as a general tonic for energy and rejuvenation and as a general cure all for many types illnesses. In herbal medicine throughout the world suma is considered an adaptogen.
Suma, with its wide range of documented uses is considered a tonic for the cardiovascular system, central nervous system treatment for hormonal disorders, sexual dysfunction and sterility. In North American herbal medicine the suma root is used as a adaptogenic and regenerative tonic regulating many systems of the body, as an immunostimulant, to treat exhaustion resulting from Epstein-Barr disease and chronic fatigue syndrome, hypoglycemia, impotence, arthritis, anemia, diabetes, cancer, tumors, mononucleosis, and high blood pressure, PMS, menopause, and hormonal disorders, and many types of stress.
Used by Russian Olympic athletes to increase muscle building and endurance with out the side effects associated with steroids. This action is attributed to the anabolic type agent beta-ecdysterone, as well as three novel ecdysterone glycosides that are found in high amounts in suma. The suma root also contains 19 different amino acids, a large number of electrolytes, and trace minerals that include iron, magnesium, cobalt, silica, and zinc with vitamins A, B1, B2, E, K and pantothenic acid. The high content of germanium accounts for its properties as an oxygenator at the cellular level.
