Safety Precautions
Hypericum extract are natural anti depressants, found to be virtually free of side effects at the standard dosage found in Pro-spera (4,6,7). Larger doses of Hypericum have been known to rarely cause photosensitivity (skin irritation after sun exposure) in some fair-skinned people. In these cases, it is advisable to avoid unprotected exposure to excessive sun and other strong sources of ultraviolet light, such as tanning beds or booths. Hypericin extract is not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation, since studies have not been done on pregnant women.

Dosage
When used for its natural anti depressants action, Hypericum is used as an extract, standardized to contain 0-3% Hypericum, taken in a dosage of about 750 to 1000 mg a day, which would be 3 to 4 capsules of Pro-spera. Significant effectiveness may not be seen, for several weeks, and two or three months of continuous use may be needed to achieve a full effect. Pro-spera is usually effective as an antidepressant after about 3 weeks at the usual adult dose of 3 or 4 capsules per day. An extra capsule can be added at bedtime initially but this becomes less necessary with regular use, as the concentration of the herb increases in the tissues. Dr. Harold H. Bloomfield, a psychiatrist in Del Mar, California (whose practice was highlighted recently on 20/20) estimates 60 to 80 percent of people get relief with formulations that contain about 0.3 percent Hypericin within a few weeks.
Pro-spera has no harmful side effects, while prescription antidepressants may cause agitation, inhibition of sex drive, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, irregular heart rhythm, nausea, insomnia, headache, and abnormal weight loss or gain. In rare cases, abnormal bleeding can occur, and even death in the case of overdoses. Those are serious cost. Pro-spera overdoses have not proven toxic, much less lethal Purdue University herb expert, Varro Tyler, notes that prescription antidepressants, such as Prozac, cause common and more serious side effects. "The absence of serious side effects is one of Hypericum’s biggest selling points," he says. The greatest cost by far, however, is in lives lost to suicide. About 70 percent of all suicides are a direct result of untreated depression. Untreated depression is the number-one cause of alcoholism drug abuse, eating disorders and other addictions. A significant percentage of divorces, spousal and child abuse, absenteeism from work, lost jobs and bankruptcies are attributed to untreated depression. What is the cost? Twelve million Americans and 1.2 million Canadians who have depression but are not being treated could attest. Pro-sera is now available, without a prescription.
WARNING: Pro•spera (Hypericum) must not be taken with other anti-depressant medications or MAO inhibitors. Seek professional advice before discontinuing prescription anti-depressants consult a physician. *
